Robert Frost Worked Hard and Also Kept Learning
"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And I looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence;
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
It was noted that in the year 1900, Frost would work being a farmer during the day raising chickens and picking apples, and also kept learning about literature and different languages at night. Frost also taught English at a school. Frost worked during the day and would teach and also learn about writing at night. Frost did this for twelve years and improved upon his writing skill set. Frost wrote many poems and sent some of them for publication at magazines and literature publications and was rejected. None of his poems were published, yet he did not get discouraged.
"A speck that would have been beneath my sight
On any but a paper sheet so white
Set off across what I had written there.
And I had idly poised my pen in air
To stop it with a period of ink
When something strange about it made me think.
This was no dust speck by my breathing blown,
But unmistakably a living mite
With inclinations it could call its own.
It paused as with suspicion of my pen,
And then came racing wildly on again
To where my manuscript was not yet dry;
Then paused again and either drank or smelt-
With loathing, for again it turned to fly.
Plainly with an intelligence I dealt.
It seemed too tiny to have room for feet,
Yet must have had a set of them complete
To express how much it didn't want to die,
It ran with terror and with cunning crept.
It faltered: I could see it hesitate;
Then in the middle of the open sheet
Cower down in desperation to accept
Whatever I accorded it of fate.
I have none of the tenderer-than-thou
Collectivistic regimenting love
With which the modern world is being swept
But this poor microscopic item now!
Since it was nothing I knew evil of
I let it lie there till I hope it slept.
I have a mind myself and recognize
Mind when I meet with it in any guise.
No one can know how glad I am to find
On any sheet the least display of mind."
Frost would write beautiful poems including poems about every day activities such as writing in the Considerable Speck. Frost described the beauty of writing and how it is an amazing activity that allows us to learn. Frost also wrote the Road Not Taken describing that we do not need to have regrets in life. Frost described that he decided to take the path less traveled and was better for it. This is interesting because it reminds us that we can be unique and distinct without having to believe that the grass is greener on the other side that the snake usually uses to tempt. Frost describes that he took the path that was different and less traveled and did not have regrets. Frost would keep writing poetry despite being rejected and not being noticed in literature for close to two decades. Frost kept writing poems and kept improving on his work skill set regardless of if there was attention or not. Frost helps us know that fame is not needed to enjoy our life and our preferred activities. Being able to be industrious and improving ourselves is of greater importance than fame. Because of Frost's dedication, he obtained renown in older age and became one of the greatest American poets ever also winning four Pulitzer prizes. (We can keep persevering knowing that we can persist with gratitude and humility without being envious. We do not have to have regrets because we know that GOD Almighty helps us persevere. The snake wants people to have regrets so that there is ingratitude that separates from the worship GOD Almighty. Instead we can have gratitude for all the good that we have in the worship of GOD Almighty.)
Robert Frost Preferred to Improve and Be Distinct Than Prioritize Temporary Wealth
"Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour,
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down today,
Nothing gold can stay."
Robert Frost did not care about fame nor temporary wealth. Frost cared about being a great poet and prioritized self-improvement and discipline. This caused Frost to develop great qualities. Frost also wrote Nothing Gold Ever Stays that may be a critique on materialism and loving money. Frost describes how disobedience to GOD Almighty led to difficulties and how temporary wealth is not the end all and be all of a person's life. Idolatry in the love of money is not the source of happiness. His poem may have been influenced by the history of the United States' gold exploration known as the gold rush in 1849 and how those who prioritized temporary material wealth were disappointed and were led to envy and coveting.
Frost describes in his poem that gold is temporary and instead we should not place our importance in the temporary things of the imperfect world. Frost's poem is a great reminder of how humility and self-discipline can help us be far apart from the road of perdition, and we can choose to have integrity instead. Frost did not allow the rejections demotivate him from writing poetry despite having worked for 12 years. He kept improving his talent and kept being humble. Without fame, without recognition, multiple rejections from magazines and publications, and battling poverty, Frost kept to his ideals. Frost lived to long life and also was able to describe that there are better things than fame and temporary material wealth.
