Sam Houston
The story of Sam Houston and David Crockett allows us to appreciate the virtue of bravery. The brave Sam Houston was able to organize the Texan soldiers after David Crockett and 160 Texan soldiers took a stand at the Alamo. The Alamo was a fortress where 160 Texans battled 1600 Mexican forces of the Mexican commander Antonio de Santa Ana. The Mexican forces had marched onto San Antonio.
While beign outnumbered close to one Texan soldier to ten Mexican soldiers, the Texan army took out a third of the Mexican army. David Crockett and Texan individuals decided to take a stand in San Antonio rather than flee to another location. While being heavily outnumbered, they destroyed a third of Santa Ana's army.
Irritated that Texan soldiers could have provided such resistance against his forces, Santa Ana killed David Crockett. David Crockett kept fighting until he was killed. David Crockett's and the Texan soldier's resistance allowed for Sam Houston to organize the Texan army and battle the Mexican forces. Sam Houston noted that the Battle at the Alamo gave him time to prepare his army and crush the forces of the Mexican army.
Antonio de Santa Ana was known to be corrupt, tyrannical, and also was a drug user. Sam Houston helped win the war that allowed Texas to be its own Republic. Texas became its own nation and obtained freedom. Some time later, Texas would be a part of the Union. Texas is an interesting state of the US. All 50 states are unique and distinct and make the US impressive. Yet, only Texas became its own country for sometime. The stories of Sam Houston and David Crockett describes the importance of bravery and independence.
